Stir Crazy

We've been passing around a cold here. Funny, since it's more flu season and we are battling this nasty head cold. Ada got it first and still has it poor thing. She and Stephen went home from church and then Stephen stayed home yesterday from work. This is always a risky proposition. Someone who is too sick to go to work, but not sick enough to want to stay in bed all day. Stephen loves spending time with the girls and I often think he would be a better stay at home "mom" than me because he seems to have more patience and he's WAY more creative and puts more effort into their daily activities. (Case in point: Saturday I worked a Zing booth at an Aids Walk and he took the girls on a ferry to Vashon Island to help clean up at a Church owned recreation property.) But he goes crazy if he's in the house more than 3 hours in a row. I, on the other hand, spent several days last winter with 2 napping children and never left the house all day except to take out the garbage. This amazed Stephen. So there were several instances in the last 2 days that he just up and said "ok, we're going for a walk". He also got busy doing all the little phone and paper trail projects we've been needing to do for a month. He's gotta be busy!

Just some recent pics and stories about the girls:Odessa found her mittens the other day when it was still 80 degrees out. She insisted on wearing them to the park so her hands wouldn't get dirty. She got outside and changed her mind. I was kind of looking forward to the park scene myself.
This story is a repeat for my poor family, so you may want to skip this one. A very well respected older woman in our church was making some sort of presentation to the primary children. She asked for questions and Odessa raised her hand and asked "are you old?". I heard about the laugh it gave everybody from several sources.
This same woman offered me some leftover frozen foods she had bought for her grandchildren when they were visiting. When she came to drop them off last week, she asked Odessa her name then said "You'll have to forgive me for forgetting you name, I am getting old." And Odessa replied "Sometimes old people die". Is that just great or what?? Surprisingly, this woman still wants to have us over for dinner sometime. Is she curious to see how Odessa can insult her age again?I never taught her how to make a rainbow, so I was surprised when she pulled these out
They were being so quiet in the tub, so I went to investigate
To celebrate the end of stir crazy day I made a Chinese feast: pot stickers, cashew chicken, stir fried green beans and broccoli with oyster sauce (found in this month's Everyday Food). Stephen walked down to the teriyaki place with a dollar to get some chopsticks. They waved his dollar off with a laugh and gave us some. Good thing since it just wouldn't taste the same off a fork. Stephen admitted at the end of the meal that he couldn't taste much of it. Great. In typical fashion, it took way longer than planned and I made a HUGE mess of the kitchen. Happy chef it's all over- Ada as photographer.

More Celebrations

Ok, just a recap of some of our celebrations this month. We were waiting on some photos. Going back to the lucky day of 09-09-09 when Stephen (and his twin Chad) turned 30! I didn't do a lot to make it a special day besides the cake already posted about. I was too busy doing more stuff in the kitchen. Stephen's real gift was these peaches which I canned that day. They are his favorite treat. He wanted to go to this German bar for dinner (great food) but we stayed home and grilled steaks on his new little grill instead!
This weekend for our anniversary we took his Birthday gift certificate to REI and he got a new jacket after 18 years of using the old one!! You think he will get rid of it? Nah.

He got me flowers from Pike Place in my wedding flower colors, red and yellow. Then we finally went to Feierabend! Although the bar scene is far from my comfort zone, the German food was delish!! Stephen got a whole ham hock and with the red cabbage "kraut" -like stuff, I helped him eat the whole thing! I think we are ready for a little quieter October, but who doesn't like celebrating??

Happy 5th Anniversary

On the actual day, I have to wish my hubby a happy anniversary! It was especially funny this morning as I was sweating it out at the gym (trying to lose some of the 12# I've put on in the last five years!) that the song 99 Red Balloons came over the system. What fun to think I was dancing to that song exactly 5 years ago at my wedding reception!
Here are some of the highlights of the last 5 years (and our relationship) in numbers:

2 beautiful little girls- as we think about adding to our family in the coming years, I am so grateful for the 2 girls we have now and how much fun they are.

5 moves: if you count the time we moved in together at the time of the wedding, we have moved 5 times in 5 years and lived in everything from a tiny house to huge farmhouse, spacious duplex, smaller apartments. We've had dishwashers and gone without, washers and dryers and not, 15 mice and only a bathtub (that was the farmhouse). Good times and many, many memories.

1825- number of days we've said "I love you" to each other.

1625- number of days I've probably said something not as nice as above and regretted it.

99% of work days we've talked on the phone.

12- number of jobs the two of us have had in 5 years.

4- number of times I've "let" him make dinner (I'd really rather be in the kitchen- it's my sanctuary)

99.9% of the time he plays rowdy games with the girls when he comes home.

2- the number of foods we differ about: blue cheese for him and some German raw meat dish for me!

2- the number of desserts we'd really like to enjoy together each night. (an Izzie, some chocolate and/or some ice cream!)

8- the number of card and board games we love to play just the two of us. (the best is Jambo, I have a rats chance of winning).

234- the number of times I have told him I want him to take me to Europe.

12- the number of years we've been friends.

6- the number of months we "dated" and were engaged combined.

4- the number of times he wrote me during his 2 year mission in Italy.

85- the number of times he wrote me during my 18 month mission in the Philippines.

100%- the number of cards and letters that come from him that I keep.

65+: the number of years I hope we have together!

Love you Honey!
love, me.

The trip to remember

When you get off the boat- there she is- the Empress Hotel (no, we didn't stay there!)
Below- eating on the wharf
Craigdarroch Castle Breakfast room and view from outside
Biking around the bays and (below) dinner at Pagliaccis (not the pizza chain- locals and tourists alike stand in the rain for an hour to get into this tiny place- we know because we did: )

Stephen with a fabulous Mercedes at the boat/art/blues festival and the view from our bike ride

For at least a year I have been planning our 5th Anniversary trip. I started by calling my mom and asking her if she would be willing to keep a weekend in September open to come and watch the girls. No kiddies invited on this trip. They didn't seem to miss us much, and I was amazed how ok I was with being away from them. The first morning when we were gone and Grandma and Grandpa were there, Odessa was jumping around on the couch.
My Mom: "Is that Ok with your mommy?"
Odessa (jumping): "No, it's not ok with mommy, but it's ok with Grandma and Grandpa!" There was no looking back after that. I told mom to put them through Grandma and Grandpa Boot Camp please.

Stephen had been wanting to visit Victoria BC ever since we moved here, so that was the obvious pick since we could take the Victoria Clipper ferry on a fast 2 1/2 ride over the border. Su-weet. The stars aligned and Stephen's work had a furlough Friday before Labor Day long weekend. 4 days to vacation!

It has taken me a week to post about this trip because A) our camera lens finally gave up the ghost after the super glue repair (see this post) and I have been trying to scan in some photos taken on a disposable camera and B) with Stephen's Birthday and canning peaches, it was a busy week. I have also not quite unpacked from this trip yet. I refuse to admit the trip is over (like with the Buick, see a pattern?) and somehow having packed luggage sitting on my hope chest makes the memory seem more fresh and like maybe I will just take my bag and run off again for a few days. Ha ha. In all seriousness, a trip without kids is not just a refreshing break. It breathes new life into me as a mother- because any time it's hard to be at home with the kids (and when isn't it?), I can just conjure up the feeling of that trip and it's enough to get me through most any moment because I know the "idea" of a break can be a reality! Does that make sense? I hope so.

Synopsis of our trip in Dos and Don'ts (sorry, it's mostly about food- we're junkies I guess)

Do sit next to 2 old guys wearing Louisiana State paraphenalia on the ferry, they will entertain you for hours with their stories in southern drawl about the South and post-Katrina. They were here for the LSU:UW game Saturday and went to Victoria Friday. Plus you will run into all your ship mates in Victoria later that day which make you feel like you have tons of friends.

Do go to Butchart Gardens- no trip to Victoria is complete without it!

Don't wear all dressy clothes even if you want to remind yourself you are not just a creature of comfort and a mom. You might do permanent damage to your favorite black boots on the bricks of Butchart.

Do bring a pair of tennis shoes (see above) and tee shirt in case your hubby suggests renting bikes and you end up pedaling to Oak Bay and back (best day of the trip).

Do eat at Tapas Bar in Trounce Alley and order as many things as you want to share. Excellent food.

Do pick all restaurants according to local recommendations and whether they have tiny tables that would never fit children and votives that your kids would put their fingers in IF they were there. Dinner can be romantic out! Who knew?

Do tell the hotel you are celebrating your 5th Anniversary and Stephen's Birthday. You might get treats.

Do sleep in late if possible. Relish in the fact that no small children are jumping on your head.

Do eat at Willie's Bakery- delish breakfasts and hands down best OJ ever.

Don't worry if there are a few drops of rain, just keep your Seattle chin up, clouds may pass and defy the weather forecasts- it may be a beautiful day!

Do rent bikes from BC Bikes- cheap, cheap cheap all day and night rates!! Great way to see all of Victoria.

Don't bother paying loads to go on a whale watching trip, you can see them from the beach!! Of course it would have been great to see them up close I guess . . .

Do buy lots of Rogers Chocolates Victorian Cremes - they are heavenly.

Don't worry about lunch if you are just too far away from Barbs fish and chips at Fisherman's Wharf. You have only your schedule to keep! You can split 2 dinners later.

Do meet up with your friends the Otterstroms if they happen to be in town the same time as you! You'll get to catch up, see their baby Bjorn and how Inge has grown.

Do check out the boats at the boat festival and peruse through the booths of artists, you might find something you just can't live without: www.jadefish.ca

Don't miss the Craigdarroch Castle. Don't spend too much time fretting how the poor family went from rags to riches to rags in about a generation or so. Too bad.

Do try the Nanaimo bars at the Olde Time Cafe on Government Street, they are divine.

Do try going to other churches (like an Anglican one) on a Sunday, it's enlightening.

Don't freak out if you don't have tea at the Empress Hotel. It's expensive and you can eat breakfast there for a lot cheaper and you can order tea- it comes in a cute teapot with a cuddly and you eat in the Empress Room- it's beautiful.

Do stand in a horrendously long line to go to the Royal BC Museum- it's worth it, especially on a rainy day.

Do order the DeNiro Antipasto at Pagliacci's (hole in the wall) and eat ALL the baked garlic (about 25 cloves) you won't regret it. Sweetest, nuttiest garlic I have ever had, like a pillow of flavor. And no side effects- seriously.

Do buy a vintage looking teapot from Murchie's, it will forever remind you of how "British" Victoria is as you sip tea or just hot chocolate from water boiled in it!

Whatever you do or don't do, I suggest finding a way to make a trip without your kids. Although I was surprised how Stephen and I didn't always want to do EXACTLY the same things, we still found that we love to have adventures and are sympatico 99% of the time. Quality time. I am already working on another trip, even if it means waiting five more years to go!

Wishing you were here

Wishing you were ALL here

Happy 30th Stephen

Ever since I found this photo I have been waiting for a good reason to post it! What better reason to embarrass your hubby than on his birthday (sorry Phil).
Happy Birthday! When you turn 30, it's always good to have a flash from your past, a picture from when you were 18 years old!! Too old for cliff diving now. har har.
We met 12 years ago, right about this time of year. I knew right away you were a keeper. I am so glad for the person you are and how many adventures we've had together. Can't wait to see the person you become in the next 30 years. Love ya!

Pisitors! (visitors)

Ok, so I have been watching too much Cinderella.
We were excited to have Chad (Stephen's brother) and Julie here. They attended the wedding of some good friends from Vet school on Saturday. We got to go out Friday night and eat at Thaiku Thai food in Ballard. Following that was cupcakes from cupcakes Royale- my favorite! Salty Caramel and Lavender (actual lavender flavored frosting, so yummy!) mmmmmm.
Saturday morning we managed to get a parking pass and play around the Discovery Park beach and lighthouse. Thanks for coming up you guys! We love having guests. Wish we had a bigger place . . . . .
What I'm sad about is that we never got a photo all together! The boys were very interested in building their own castles and having the waves take them out
